Mind Adventures is celebrating 20 years of making theatre in Sri Lanka, and we need your help to create an original play about an exceptional warrior in troubled times.
Inspired by extraordinary women in Sri Lankan mythology and history, our story will focus on communal attitudes towards love, marriage, sacrifice, duty and power.
Using mask, live music and movement, this production will fuse traditional and contemporary techniques of storytelling to create a predominantly non-verbal performance that will be accessible to all audiences.
Background— A medieval society, on the dark, tropical island of Serendip, where Devils of many kinds are everywhere: a complex ecosystem of spirit creatures with the power to affect the physical world. In Serendip, incantatory magic has no effect. Instead, fighting devils requires your whole body; a precise, rhythmic manipulation of space-time.
Women in Serendip are forbidden from conducting exorcisms. As far as civilians are concerned the kingdom is kept safe by the extravagant, noisy exorcisms of the king’s male devil-dancers, overseen by his Chief Minister (the Adigar). But a secret sisterhood, appointed and governed by the queens of Serendip, has always done the real work.
Plot— When demonic forces abduct the queen of Serendip, Maya, a fierce, young exorcist in the clandestine queen’s guard, is framed. Along with her gurus Ekka and Dekka, Maya must survive a kingdom descending into chaos and rescue the queen before a world-eating devil unleashes itself on humanity.
